Exciting action in all levels of play at the Denver Athletic Club

Over 70 players participated in the 34th Annual DAC Open in 12 divisions. The matches were hard fought with some repeat champions and newly crowned victors. The B and C divisions were stacked with players from Gene Schneider’s School of Mines’ classes and junior players that have been developed through the Costigan Youth program run by Bob Hickman. Pat Francomano, Juan Vasquez, and Mack Roberts competed in the Diamond Masters (70+) round-robin bracket on the opposite side of the age spectrum. Pat prevailed to win the division and Juan took second place.

The tournament had players from New Mexico (Dave Coulie), Utah (Gary Scogin), and Missouri (Eddie (Chip) Morales) in addition to many long time Colorado residents. Some of the highlights from the competition are as follows.

Armando Ibarra Jr., and Cody Parker pulled off an upset win over Bear Meiring and Kevin Price in the Open Doubles semifinal ((5), 16, 10). Mark Hammond/Mike Kearney beat Tyler Stevens and Eddie Morales in the other hard fought semifinal match ((14),16,3). Mark and Mike prevailed over Armando and Cody in two games (9,4). Bear Meiring won convincingly over Eddie Morales in the Open final (10, 18) to claim another DAC Open Singles’ final.

Tom Marzilli, a relative newcomer to Colorado and handball, “slammed” the C division with wins in the singles over Rafael Ibarra (7,4) and doubles with partner Ken Melby defeating Bob Hickman and Don Walton (0, 10). There were many other great matches and victors as detailed in the results listed below.

The tournament would not have been possible without the support of the sponsors and contributors. The tournament directors, John Bannister and Stan Dunlavy, want to thank the following companies and individuals for their generous support: Wynkoop Brewery, Half Fast Subs, Costigan Youth Foundation, InCheck, Gene Schneider, Greg Oyler, Steve Rothstein, Dan Price, Kevin Dowling, and Stan Dunlavy. A special thanks to Stan Wolpoff and Bob Hickman for their help with running the tournament due to John Bannister’s illness.

Last, but not least, is the Denver Athletic Club. The DAC is the premier athletic facility in Colorado for handball. Thank you to the management for their continued support of handball and to the DAC staff for making the tournament a great experience.
